Why Kevin St. Laurent is a god among dancers

Kevin St. Laurent & Laura Keat - Montpellier Swing Dance Festival 2006
I don't really care for the partner. She's good, but only because she's dancing with one of the most inspired dancers ever (although I will say this: if she's the same girl who won the 05' PHXLX Solo Charleston Comp, she's got some serious moves on her own...this just isn't my favorite display of them). He's just brilliant!

Kevin & Frida with Zack & Carla - BarSwingOna 2003 (Barcelona, Spain)
Nobody's even watching Zack & Carla!! How can you with all that fun and energy going on between Frida and Kevin?!! One of the coolest obviously lead-follow non-choreographed dances ever.

  1. Wow. I never thought I could imagine a hoppy lamer than bug collecting.

The guy didn't even do anything impressive, other than prove definitively that he's gay.

  2. You do nothing but prove your own ingnorance, my friend. The free spins alone are pretty damn impressive. And that drop in the second video is amazing. And then there's that sweet-ass kick he does at the end of the hold. Not to mention the kick-over-the-partner's-head move...

And none of its that choreographed bullshit you see in movies and on TV. Its all lead-follow. Which means, my friend, you have no idea what you're talking about.

  3. I'm just saying. You call this guy a god. Then you show me some video that's not particularly impressive. Mr. St. Laurent's status as a "god" among dancers suggests, to me, at least, that he's one of the best. When someone who's the best at something does the thing they're best at, you'd expect to be impressed, even if you don't have the expertise I admittedly and thankfully lack in the area of "swing dancing."

For example, when the best guitar player in the world plays the guitar, even a non-guitar player stands up and takes notice. I don't know much about golf, but I'm still impressed by Tiger Woods. Granted, someone who knows a lot about the particular field, such as you and "dancing," might appreciate the performer's talent on a deeper level. But that doesn't damage the claim that if someone's best, they should impress even the uninitiated.

Mr. St. Laurent (if that is in fact his name) doesn't impress. So, that leaves two possible conclusions. Either he sucks or "swing dancing" sucks. Unfortunately, I don't have enough evidence to decide between those two alternatives.

  4. Here's the question: are you impressed by watching Tiger Woods or by hearnig his score? Could you watch a video of two different golf players and tell which one is the better based solely on his swing? I doubt it. We all know that Tiger's good because his scores reflect that. But we can't tell you why. So when I watch Tiger Woods, I'm not impressed by his skill, I'm impressed by his score, since I don't have the know-how to identify a really good gold player when I see one. Poor Kevin doesn't have a score to rely on, so if he doesn't impress you, its because you don't know what you're looking at. Guitar playing is something that you do know quite a bit about and so I'm not surprised that you can identify good from bad immedietly. But (as you are well aware), I have been known to be impressed by what you would consider horrible bands. I don't think its merely a matter of taste, just that you've listened to more guitar solos than I have and appreciate the nuance more than I do. Just so with swing dancing.
But hey, if you're not into dancing, you're not into dancing.
